Professor Ian Williams Joins Chorus of Acclaim for Major Tech Expose, 99 Days: A Warning About Technology by Gerry McGovern: "Big Tech will hate it"
Leading experts and academics have been heaping praise on McGovern's "brilliant" critique of big tech and consumerism.
Irish author and Hot Press columnist Gerry McGovern's upcoming book, 99th Day: A Warning About Technology, has been lauded as "beautifully written" and "unforgettable" by leading academics.
Set to be published by Dagda in February, what is being widely hailed as an "essential book" takes an in-depth look into the dire state of our planet, with our current consumerist habits, the great lying machine of Big Tech and the huge damage inflicted by mining all coming under the microscope.
"Gerry McGovern’s book, 99th Day: A Warning About Technology, shines new light on the damage done to society and the environment by greedy Big Tech companies," said Ian Williams, Professor of Applied Environmental Science, University of Southampton.
"It is a beautifully written, evidence-based, eye-opening, frightening, page-turner. McGovern explains the damage done when the rich get richer by the destruction of our environment via the 'Growth Death Cult'. He makes it painfully clear why society needs degrowth to survive.
"It is a wise book from a wise man. Big Tech will hate it. That’s why it is such an important book.”
Dr. Steven Emerman, who is among the world’s most renowned commentators on the impact of groundwater and mining, is the latest leading academic and expert to add words of high praise for a book that is destined to create considerable controversy.
“I learned a great deal from this book that will be useful to me in my work with mining-impacted communities," Dr. Emerman said. "I started keeping track of pithy phrases from the book, but I quickly gave up when I realised that, almost like a work of Shakespeare, the book was one unforgettable sentence after another. You might think that I am recommending that you buy this book. That would be fine, but I am really recommending that you consider how you, yourself, can best put into practice the last word of the book: 'Resist.'”
Receiving further praise as "essential reading" from Justine McCarthy of The Irish Times, 99th Day sees McGovern delve into the many manifestations of our cultures of excess, Ireland's environmental shift, the devastating consequences of mining, the damage caused by big tech and more.
“This is a masterful book, brilliant in its clarity and beguiling in its argument," added Tim Unwin, Emeritus Professor of Geography at the University of London.
"It lays bare the immense harms that those who design, build and sell digital tech are doing to the environment and Nature, and warns of the frightening implications that this has for human
society. It needs to be widely read and acted upon.”
