DkIT student James Devine: "The experience gave me much greater confidence about working in marketing after graduation"
4th year student James Devine discusses how the mix of coursework and internships offered by DkIT has assured him he can take on his career with aplomb.
“I wanted a course where I could show off my creativity and explore opportunities across different areas or sectors,” says Fourth Year DkIT student James Devine, “that would open a vast range of career options and had many modules that matched my creative interests.”
James found all of this – and more – in DkIT’s Digital Marketing Strategic Communications course, which combines theory with practical projects, giving students opportunities to apply their learning to real-world marketing challenges.
Experiences include a fundraising event for Focus Ireland and a 12-week placement with the DkIT Marketing team. Both provided James with invaluable opportunities to put his skills into practice.
“Being in a work environment where you’re encouraged to grow while feeling supported and trusted was incredibly beneficial, he says. “The experience gave me much greater confidence about working in marketing after graduation.”
From developing creative campaigns to leading his own ‘Creators on Campus’ initiative, James made significant contributions during his internship. He also represented DkIT at major events, including the UCAS Discovery Event in Lisburn.

As he puts it: “Every part of this internship helped me develop, both personally and professionally.”
Back on campus, modules like Writing for Digital Media, Event Management, and Image Editing and Design Theory allowed James to develop his creativity alongside practical skills – both of which matter hugely in an ever-changing world. James also cites strong communication skills as key to success on the course.
“With a massive rise in online marketing and communication, effectively getting your business or product out there is more important than ever,” he reflects. “This course helps prepare you for all aspects of these areas while developing many other transferable skills.”
Having gained industry experience during his time at DkIT, James is focused on the next chapter. He hopes to further hone his talent for digital marketing with a master’s degree before one day opening his own agency.
