The Breton musician plans to explore his extensive back catalogue as well as perform tracks from his latest album ∞ (Infinity).
Yann Tiersen has announced a return to Dublin with a September 23 date at Vicar Street. The Brittany native is known for his eclectic style, often combining guitars, synthesizers and violins with instruments like the melodica, xylophone, toy piano, harpsichord, accordion and typewriter. This unique approach gained Tiersen worldwide recognition after his music was used heavily in the soundtrack of the 2001 film Amélie.
Since then Tiersen has continued to contribute to film soundtracks and record albums, with his most recent, ∞ (Infinity), being released this past May. ∞ (Infinity) marks something of a return to the earlier styles of Tiersen's work, particularly in the implementation of toy instruments, but with a more experimental take on the concept.
"The idea was to start with toy instruments as a reference to my early works, then manipulate the sounds electronically as far as possible to end up with a new base," described Tiersen of the process. "I took that base and added a new layer of acoustic instruments, and repeated the same process. Finally I repeated the process with strings, so the all album was a constant back and forth from acoustic to electronic to electric to digital, back to analogue. Then all back the other way."
