Will Jamie Lawson hit Number 1?
YouTube hit set to storm tomorrow's chart
UK singer-songwriter Jamie Lawson is set to debut at Number 1 in tomorrow's Irish singles chart after less than a week on sale. The song 'Wasn't Expecting That' was recorded as a YouTube video and uploaded by the singer himself in the first week in January until Today FM DJ Ian Dempsey began playing the song on his morning show. YouTube hits, Twitter trending, a frenzied interest in a hastily organised gig in Whelan's last week and a late booking onto The Late Late Show all ensued before the song was eventually released on Monday and has subsequently spent the week at the top of the iTunes download chart, holding off competition from Jessie J and Bruno Mars.
It's a genuinely rags-to-riches story for Lawson who released his debut album The Pull of the Moon (which incidentally, is likely to hit the Top 5 in the Album Chart also) last summer to several rave reviews but commercial failure. The sudden explosion of the song is covered in the singer's own blogpost which makes for a heart-warming read.

Lawson cancelled commitments in the UK to come back to Ireland today and has several promotional engagements here in the next few days. Here is the country's new David Gray performing the song on The Late Late Show.
