The country music legend had recently been battling a long illness.
Grammy award winning country singer Guy Clark has died aged 74. US newspaper The Tennessean has reported he passed away at his home in Nashville, Tennessee earlier today, May 17.
Numerous musical fans and admirers have been paying their respects.
"Travel safe, old friend," says Roseanne Cash. "I would not be the songwriter I am if I hadn't sat at your table and learned from a master."
"Sad to hear about the passing of Guy Clark. I'll never forget the day I wrote with him and him busting out a J the size of a baseball bat", Kacey Musgraves reminisces fondly.
"Loved Guy’s heart, his humor and his country wisdom. He will be missed," tweeted his old pal Ricky Skaggs, while Gretchen Peters proffers: "Another huge loss for music. A hundred floors above us in the tower of song."
Clark's health had been declining for a number of years and was most recently battling cancer. His was wife Susanna passed away from the disease in 2012. Born in Monahans, Texas in 1941 and moved to Houston in the late 60's to perform folks songs on the club circuit there.
He moved to Nashville in the early 70's where a number of other country artists, including Johnny Cash, recorded covers of his songs. In 1975 he released his debut album Old No. 1. This was the first of thirteen he would produce throughout his career. He was a member of the Nashville Songwriter's Hall of Fame. His most recent album, My Favourite Picture of You won Best Folk Album at the 2014 Grammys. His death was announced via his official Facebook page today.
