U2 and The Corrs make list of biggest albums of all time on Official UK Chart

U2 and The Corrs have claimed spots on the Official UK Chart’s list of biggest albums of all time, with U2’s The Joshua Tree at No. 37 and The Corrs’ Talk On Corners at No. 44.

Coming in the top three are Queen with their Greatest Hits album at No.1, ABBA with Gold – Greatest Hits at No.2 and Oasis with (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? at No.3.

Adele’s 21, The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours follow closely behind.

The list is based on combined UK sales and streaming data from the Official Charts.

U2 also recently made 6^th place on the list of most-streamed albums of the ‘80s with The Joshua Tree, their fifth studio album.

Released on March 9, 1987 and debuting at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart, it became the fastest-selling album in British history at the time.

“The Joshua Tree rescues rock from its decay, bravely and unashamedly basing itself in the mainstream before very cleverly lifting off into several higher dimensions,” wrote Hot Press’ Bill Graham of the album in 1987. “U2 can no longer be patronised with faint and glib praise. They must be taken very seriously indeed after this re-evaluation of rock.”

The Corrs’ second studio album, Talk On Corners was released October 17, 1997 and features a blend of traditional Celtic music with pop and rock. It was the best-selling album in the UK in 1998 and spent 142 weeks on the UK charts.

The record was re-issued in mid-1998 to include a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams,’ which hit the UK Top 10.

"We have a motto, and it's this: if we believe our own propaganda, then we're doomed,” said John Hughes, the band’s manager, in an interview with Hot Press after the release of their third studio album, In Blue. “And I think that's what people do fall into, a kind of 'I must be great because I sold all those records' syndrome. That kind of thing is to be avoided like the plague."
