Tributes paid to Black Midi's Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, who has died aged 26
"A talented musician and a kind, loving young man finally succumbed," a statement from Kwasniewski-Kelvin's family reads. "He will always be loved."
Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, a founding member of Black Midi, has died aged 26, a statement from his family has confirmed.
The band's label, Rough Trade, shared the statement on social media, describing Kwasniewski-Kelvin as "an incredibly talented person who will be truly missed." The label also urged those are struggling with mental health issues to "reach out to your loved ones or one of the range of charities such as Mind, CALM and Samaritans who provide services and someone to talk to in any time of need."
"It is with deep sadness that we as a family regret to inform you that Matthew Kwasniewski-Kelvin has died after a long battle with his mental health," the message from his family reads.
"A talented musician and a kind, loving young man finally succumbed; despite all efforts. Matt was 26 years old.
"He will always be loved," the statement concludes. "Please take a moment to check in with your loved ones so we can stop this happening to our young men."
Kwasniewski-Kelvin played guitar on Black Midi's acclaimed debut album, Schlagenheim – which was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2019, and featured on multiple best-of-year lists. In January 2021, the band announced on social media that Matt would be taking time off from the band, due to his struggles with his mental health.
Lankum, Fontaines D.C.'s Conor Deegan III, Sleaford Mods' Jason Williamson, Billy Nomates and broadcaster Mary Anne Hobbs have all expressed their sympathies in the comment section of Rough Trade's Instagram post.
"Rest in peace, Matthew," Jason Williamson wrote. "Thoughts are with his family. X"
"I'm so very sad and sorry to hear this tragic news," Mary Anne Hobbs posted. "Rest in peace Matt you beautiful genius"
