KNEECAP's Móglaí Bap: "Suicide is such a complex thing"
‘Irish Goodbye’ featuring Kae Tempest is set to be released tomorrow, April 28.
Ahead of the release of KNEECAP's new album this week, Móglaí Bap has shared a powerful statement on social media - reflecting on the loss of his mother to suicide, and revealing how she inspired the trio's new single, ‘Irish Goodbye’, set to be released tomorrow, April 28.
He said that the track was written after seeing his mother in a documentary, which someone had sent to his brother, about his father in the 90s, when he was president of Conradh na Gaeilge.
The Irish rapper added that the footage had a profound impact on him as his mother, who suffered from depression and died by suicide, looked happy in the documentary's footage.
"Suicide is hard," said Móglaí Bap. "And when someone is sick with depression and dies by suicide, it's hard to remember the good moments. You get caught up in the dark times.
"‘Irish Goodbye’ is about the mundane things me and my Ma did together. I never realised it was the day to day stuff I would miss when she was gone; going for a walk in the park, her giving out to me or keeping me in line, offering me pieces of advice. It's all the small things that you miss.
"Watching that footage of her and writing this song, unlocked a part of my brain that gave me the opportunity to override the constant sad memories. It allowed me to visualise happier times, instead of being so angry at the world."
Móglaí Bap also mentioned the struggles that those close to someone who died by suicide face while grieving, adding that he hopes that the forthcoming track can bring some relief.
"I'm hoping if people listen to the song, and watch the video, maybe something will connect that gives them some sort of relief," added Móglaí Bap. "You can't carry this stuff around with you and blame yourself. It's not your fault. It's no one's fault. It's about the process of dealing with it. And you can deal with it. You can."
The upcoming track's music was written by Fontaines D.C. and Black Midi collaborator Dan Carey and features English spoken word artist Kae Tempest.
KNEECAP's upcoming album FENIAN will be released this Friday, May 1.
