The Virgin Suicides soundrack episode of Hot Press Classics out now - feat. Jeffrey Eugenides
Paul Nolan heads back to the sun-dappled streets of '70s suburbia, as he revisits Air's classic 2000 soundtrack for Sofia Coppola's directorial debut, The Virgin Suicides. Plus an interview with Pulitzer-winning Virgin Suicides author Jeffrey Eugenides.
Hot Press Classics is back for its latest intalment, focusing on the soundtrack of Sofia Coppola’s debut film The Virgin Suicides by French electronic band Air.
In the episode, Paul Nolan discusses Coppola’s brilliant adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’ cult book The Virgin Suicides, the incredible outpouring of cult classics from 1999 and Air’s atmospheric work on the movie’s soundtrack.
Elsewhere, he examines Air’s place within the French electronic wave of the late 90’s, the sparseness of their releases over the course their 30 years long career, and their ongoing popularity to this day.
Additionally, Nolan speaks of the film’s genius tonal balance between a dark narrative and some lighter, even comedic tones ; the actors’ brilliant performances, and Coppola’s perfect track record in curating memorable soundtracks for her films.
Rounding up the episode, we bring back an interview from 2017 with The Virgin Suicides’ author Jeffrey Eugenides where he offers fascinating details about the book, including his inspirations, as well as its impact and its adaptation to the screen.
Find out about this and more in the new episode of Hot Press Classics, produced by Paul Nolan and edited by Flo Laurent.
