The Horrors on their musical evolution, keeping it honest
Drummer Joe Spurgeon and singer Faris Badwan from English Indie rock band The Horrors spoke with Hot Press Craig Fitzpatrick about their journey from gothic punk to experimenting with electronic influences in their recently released fourth album Luminous.
Adventurous spirits and a need for discovery led The Horrors to their current plot of dance beats mixed with a well-defined rock sound, and according to Joe, that’s the real fun of it all.
“We really feel like when we’re making records, we have to take note of that: ‘are we enjoying making it, is it ground we’ve covered before?’ The answers to those questions let us know whether it’s going the right way.”
The band might let their influences come from all corners of the music world, but Faris says cheap tricks for success will never shape their sounds.
“Any time we actually get on the radio, it’s an achievement really. Also any time we get in the charts. But it definitely doesn’t drive the whole thing, because we’d be making records even if we were all living in a cave. It really is what excites us, and is the driving force behind our lives…”
