Sightsavers launch exciting nationwide photo competition
No selfies allowed!
The team at Dublin-based charity Sightsavers work tirelessly to prevent causes of avoidable blindness in developing countries through a variety of inventive ways.
One such endeavour is the new 'Snap A Sight' photo competition, with Sightsavers calling on people across Ireland, particularly teenagers, to turn their camera phones around, ditch the usual 'selfie' and instead snap a sight from the world around them.
The theme of the competition is “The Sight I’d Miss Most”. All types of photos are encouraged, from scenic views to memorable holiday snaps to clever takes on the theme. Photos of people are also allowed but to add a creative twist, Sightsavers will only accept ones where the person is not recognisable. Submissions can be made by sending photo, name, age, county, email and telephone to [email protected] or via [link]sightsaverscompetition.ie[/link]
All photographs entered in the competition will feature on Sightsaver's Facebook page. The top publically 'liked' images will then be submitted to the judging panel, comprised of rugby star Cian Healy, radio presenter Rick O'Shea and broadcaster and journalist Una Mullally. A prize-giving ceremony and exhibition will follow in February. Prizes up for grabs include an iPad and One4All vouchers.
“As a sportsman, my sight is integral to me," says Cian Healy. "Without it I wouldn’t be where I am today. Because of this, I am proud to lend my support to Sightsavers. I believe that raising awareness about avoidable blindness and how we can help sends a message to people that they are capable of doing change for the better.
"The ‘Snap A Sight’ competition is a brilliant initiative and an easy way for people to get involved with the cause. I feel it will make a positive difference to the plight of many people in our world and I am lucky to be part of that difference in a small way.”
