Sean 'Diddy' Combs actively seeking pardon from Trump, says attorney
"It's my understanding that we've reached out and had conversations in reference to a pardon," said Diddy's attorney.
Sean 'Diddy' Combs is actively seeking a presidential pardon from U.S. President Donald Trump, according to one of Combs' lawyers.
On July 2, the rapper and record executive was found guilty of transportation to engage in prostitution after an eight-week sex trafficking trial.
In an interview with CNN yesterday, Combs' attorney Nicole Westmoreland said his defence team is in conversations with the Trump administration about a potential pardon.
"It's my understanding that we've reached out and had conversations in reference to a pardon," Westmoreland said.
On July 29, Trump administration sources told Deadline that a pardon for Combs is being "seriously considered" and the issue had been raised from "just another Trump weave to an actionable event."
Albeit, Trump said in an interview with Newsmax last week that he was unlikely to grant Combs a pardon.
"I didn’t know him well, but when I ran for office, he was very hostile," Trump said, adding that Combs' lack of support for the Trump campaign makes pardoning him "more difficult to do."
When CNN asked Westmoreland about Combs' hopes for a pardon after Trump's comments, she said Combs "is a very hopeful person and I believe that he remains hopeful."
The White House told CNN that they "will not comment on the existence or nonexistence of any clemency request."
Combs has been repeatedly denied a bond of $50 million (€43.6 million) and release from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York. He faces a maximum sentence of ten years in prison.
Combs is set to receive his sentencing on October 3.
