Radio Caroline set to hit Irish airwaves
The station that rewrote the commercial radio rulebook in Europe, Radio Caroline, is close to sealing a deal with NTL which will make their programming available in Dublin, Cork and Waterford City.
“We are awaiting an invoice from NTL cable to pay for hardware they need in order to send our signal in Southern Ireland,” confirms Programme Director Peter Moore.
“NTL are very slow and we have been discussing this possibility for some time, but we hope it will now happen soon.”
Set-up in 1964 by Dubliner Ronan O’Rahilly, Caroline initially broadcast illegally from a series of boats anchored off the British and Dutch coasts.
Those who took to the high seas with them include Tony Blackburn, Dave Lee Travis, Johnnie Walker, 2FM’s Gareth O’Callaghan, Today FM’s Tom Hardy, Phantom FM’s Steve Conway and, briefly, Hotpress’ Stuart Clark.
Following the boarding of their last vessel, the Ross Revenge, by the Belgian authorities, they went legit on satellite and the internet and have retained a strong cult following.
