Gravity and 12 Years A Slave the major winners
The shiny but slightly terrifying face of the British Academy Film Awards rose again last night to deliver a bag of surprises, disappointments and Stephen Fry.
The big winners were Gravity which picked up a six-pack including Best British Film (Yeah….I know) and Best Director, whilst 12 Years A Slave got the top prize of Best Picture.
American Hustle also won a couple of awards (including a Best Supporting Actress win for Jennifer Lawrence over Lupita Nyong’o which sent Twitter into a tailspin)
Irish interest was prevalent with Philomena winning Best Adapted Screenplay for Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope, but picking up nothing else despite being nominated in three other categories.
Colin Carberry, scribe of Hot Press and now successful screenwriter was nominated for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Actor or Producer for Good Vibrations, the story of the Terri Hooley.

However he was pipped to the proverbial post by Welsh writer/director Keiran Evans, whose winning film Kelly + Victor features the up and coming talents of Northern Irish actress Antonia Campbell-Hughes.
I’m sure Colin will get recognized by the Kermode awards at some point.
So all in all some good some bad.
Oscars are around the corner, it’s money on the table time.
