On this day fifty years ago, Pink Floyd released The Piper At the Gates of Dawn
It was on this day, August 4, fifty years ago that Pink Floyd released their debut album, The Piper At the Gates of Dawn. Hailed as one of the greatest psychedelic rock albums of the era, the album received rave reviews. It remained influential through the years, and was ranked 347th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" in 2012. It was the only Pink Floyd album that was primarily written by Syd Barrett, and produced under Barrett's creative authority.
The name of the album came from a chapter in Kenneth Grahame's novel The Wind in the Willows. It took three months to record, from February to May 1967, before it was finally released in August.
