Prince musical Purple Rain to debut on Broadway in 2027

The Prince musical Purple Rain will debut on Broadway in April 2027.

It is based on the award-winning film of the same name and features over 20 of the artist's songs, after an initial run in Prince's hometown of Minneapolis in November 2025.

Purple Rain will show at the Majestic Theatre in New York City, with previews starting March 12 and opening night set for April 12.

The news comes on the 42^nd anniversary of the semi-bioautographical film, which stormed the box office with nearly $100 million worldwide in July of 1984. The musical features the same plot as the original film.

“Minneapolis, 1984. A new era of music television is creating overnight stars,” reads the logline. “A magnetic young performer known as ‘The Kid’ seems like the perfect frontman to lead his bandmates to stardom. But when his past threatens everything he’s built, he’ll have to sing his way out of the darkness and into the spotlight where he belongs.”

The musical will be directed by Saheem Ali (Buena Vista Social Club) with a book by playwright Peter Duchan (Dogfight). The music team is led by Jason Michael Webb (MJ the Musical) and choreography by Ebony Williams. Bobby Z and Morris Hayes, Prince’s former bandmates, will be musical advisers.

The show's cast has not yet been announced.

Released in 1984, the Purple Rain album received two Grammys, two Brit Awards, three American Music Awards and an Academy Award. It remained at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for 24 weeks.
