The musician & TV star writes candidly about his mental health issues & recalls the Hot Press interview in which he decided to go public about his anxiety attacks
Today marks the publication of Me And My Mate Jeffery, a powerful book in which musician and TV star Niall Breslin talks about living with depression and anxiety - 'Jeffery' being the name he chose for his twin foes.
You'll be able to buy the tome and meet the author, who was up early this morning to appear on TV3's Ireland AM, at noon on Saturday when he appears in Eason on O'Connell Street.
"When my legs went from underneath me and my breath stopped coming, just minutes before we were due to go live on The Voice, I knew this was panic at its worst," Bressie says of the episode that almost derailed his Irish TV career. "Yet in the midst of the madness, something became clear. If I got through this, the secret I had guarded for years with all my life could not remain secret for much longer..."
Breslin also writes about how he opened up for the first time about his mental health struggles to Hot Press' Stuart Clark.
"Stuart is a craft beer connoisseur," he recalls. "Not wanting to be a spoilsport, I shared a beer with him. I noticed myself getting slightly emotional, which is never an ideal place to find yourself during a press interview, but Stuart has a very calm nature and it felt like I was speaking to a friend rather than a journalist. He noted a slight change in the direction from the last record and suggested perhaps the lyrics were a little more personal than on my previous albums. He picked up on one song in particular, 'Silence Is Your Saviour', and asked me about the background to the track. That was it, I was about to open up to the media about my past, regardless of the time outcome. It felt right."
