New Irish Songs To Hear This Week
Check out some of our favourite Irish releases from the week
EvieB, 'Living in a Standstill'
EvieB has released her soulful single, 'Living in a Standstill'.
The song explores the feeling of being stuck in a rut, of questioning progress and direction in life. It speaks particularly to the uncertainty of pursuing a career in the creative industry, where the future can feel unpredictable and security hard to grasp.
"The track was inspired by conversations I’ve had with people across all ages and professions, which revealed just how universal this sense of unease and stagnation is," said EvieB.
EvieB has performed with and supported Irish acts such as Mary Black, Mundy and Mary Coughlan, and also shared the stage with artists such as Sharon Shannon, Cait O'Riordan and Camille O'Sullivan, amongst others.
Storytelling sits at the heart of her work, shaped by early exposure to the arts and a deep-rooted musical heritage. With a mother working in film and a father immersed in music, creativity was always a constant for EvieB.
EvieBRia Rua, 'You'll Only Like Me When I'm Dead'
Hot off her new debut album SCAPEG.O.A.T., Ria Rua drops 'You'll Only Like Me When I'm Dead'.
'You'll Only Like Me When I’m Dead' takes aim at the patriarchy and the erosion of serious journalism in our world that's flooded with misinformation and AI.
A radical statement of individuality and self-liberation, SCAPEG.O.A.T. channels Rua’s ferociously energetic sound through thunderous drums, heavy guitars and provocative lyricism. The album fuses high-energy alt-rock with eclectic pop, balancing raw intensity with sharp wit, sexual defiance and emotional vulnerability. Across SCAPEG.O.A.T., Rua tackles power, patriarchy, conformity and identity.
"SCAPEG.O.A.T. is a protest album. It's personal – in that all the songs are about my experiences in the world – but at its core it's about getting angry and standing up for yourself in a world that's gone mad," said Ria Rua.
To coincide with the release, Ria Rua will take the album on the road with headline dates across Dublin, Galway, Cork and Belfast, alongside a London date at Windmill Brixton on March 2.

Coming in on a low end three note bass riff, the track finds the band creating their own unique electricity over a steel heavy pulse, making for an exquisitely riotous soundscape.
Talking about the track, Kneecap said: "A track that's reminiscing on Revolutionary times in Ireland, driven by a hopefulness, when the working class, academics and good people everywhere united and took action in search of a better future."

Galway singer-songwriter Amy McCarthy is back with her latest track, 'Rain'.
At its heart, 'Rain' is about feeling stuck in your own thoughts — holding onto ideas you can’t let go of, while struggling to begin again. The imagery of rain runs throughout the track, symbolising both heaviness and clarity. It reflects the tension between being overwhelmed and finding release.
"Rain came from a place of overthinking and feeling lost in my own head. I wanted to capture that sense of building walls around yourself, but also the hope that comes when something finally breaks through," says McCarthy.
Amy McCarthyAction Rec, 'Skat'

TOUCANChris McGrath, 'The Ballad Of Sheep'
'The Ballad Of Sheep' is an extremely atmospheric, powerful, and rich-sounding anti-establishment piece, written by Chris McGrath.
The lyrics deal with the frustrations of how the world is run and how divided, and disconnected people have become. Accompanied by an acoustic guitar and light orchestral string work, the story concludes with a message of unity at the end, which descends into chaos musically, evoking pictures of anarchy that is intended to light a fire in the listener.
The appearing electronic sounds nicely complete the production, at times pushing a slightly disturbing tone.
Chris McGrathSaltaire, ‘Aldborough Parade’
Saltaire have shared an incredibly heartfelt track, uniquely marked with Irish spirit, and all the best things folk.

Mr Billy FitzgeraldÆ MAK, ‘Folk Songs for Mama & Papa’
The title track form Æ MAK’s upcoming debut album, ‘Folk Songs for Mama & Papa’ is a soothing and intimate tune lined with slow but angular guitar textures which give the track an otherworldly feel. Described as a “self-soothing lullaby”, the track was penned during anxious, sleepless nights.
“Intuitively, this song became the title of the record,” Æ MAK explains. “Not as a reference to The Mamas & The Papas, but to my mam and pappi, who raised me on folk music and harmony and shared listening - albums left leaning by the turntable for easy reaching”.

Hailing from Molly Vupyne’s new album Houndstooth and the Hum, out now, ‘You’re a Fad x’ is a gritty and rousing tune of riotous guitar riffs, breathless percussions and the singer’s clear yet abrasive vocal performance.
Described by the singer as “a song about the fake people in the music industry who prioritise style over substance and ego over art. In this industry, there are people who want to make music and people who just want to be famous,” the track is a tongue in cheek exploration of some characters that Vulpyne speaks of.

Vocally, it captures the descent of social anxiety into mania, with vocalist Cian describing it as "the narrator is having an internal meltdown."
Evoking artists like Big Black or a more chaotic Sonic Youth, 'DNB' embodies confusion and mayhem. The song is driven by a chaotic vocal delivery, powerful guitar work, and an overriding sense of desperation and a need to make noise.

It is driven by commanding guitars, a pulsating bassline, and explosive drumming, complementing lyrics that explore the destructive dynamic of a mutually negative, toxic relationship. Ultimately, Stone Blind State effectively synthesizes their various influences to forge a sound that is entirely their own.

Indie rock band Diveboy have released their new single ‘Built-in Heartbreak’.
With a soft, romantic guitar at the centre, the track captures the bitter-sweet moment of falling in love, while also feeling that the relationship is set to fail from the start. It’s about wanting to be with someone, but also knowing that you’ve got heartbreak already within you.
“The idea for ‘Built-in Heartbreak’ came about when I was around at a friend’s house listening to one of Bob Dylan’s old radio shows,” said Diveboy’s frontman Tony O’Donovan.
“Bob was introducing a country singer when he said - ‘Johnny had a distinctive voice that songwriters loved, it had a little catch in it, like a built-in heartbreak.”, and that phrase really jumped out at me.

Featuring as the first track on Rosie Carney's new album, ‘Everything Is Wrong’ is just what you need to set the mood of Doomsday…Don’t Leave Me Here. Are desperation and loneliness sexy, or is it just relieving to hear honesty on the human condition? The track will leave you in contemplation.
Co-written by the 1975’s Ross MacDonald, the song features heartbreak in all it’s glory, minus any glitz and glamour. But even in tragedy, the ability of ‘Everything Is Wrong’ to leave you wondering what’s next, to feel hopeful in the face of uncertainty and blank slates, makes the track all the more powerful.
Different from her previous work, Carney commands the line between folk and showgaze, bringing a confidence like never before. Doomsday…Don’t Leave Me Here is out now!
Rosie Carney.AIDXN G, ‘DIRTY LAUNDRY’
First considered for this year’s Eurovision prior to the cancellation, ‘DIRTY LAUNDRY’ comes as AIDXN G’s confrontation for honesty.
“Bittersweet bye bye, you’re boring / Living life never not performing,” they sing on the chorus, noting you’ll only get your flowers for authenticity.
The track is completely unashamed, fueled by energy and the desire to live life to the fullest. ‘DIRTY LAUNDRY’ is just what you need on a night out if you feel the spirit kicking down, revamping the vitality with glamourous pop, and also, absolutely ideal for those lipsync battles in the mirror.
We can’t wait to see what’s next!
AIDXN G.Muirġen, ‘Mo Bháidín’
Thankfully, we’re lucky enough to hear ‘Mo Bháidín’off of Muirġen’s upcoming EP Loinnir before the record drops on May 15. The second recent single to reach out ears, ‘Mo Bháidín’ blends traditional Irish folk with contemporary styles, showing off the breadth of her vocal talents.
“‘Mo Bháidín’ was inspired by the old Irish song Óró Mo Bháidín and was ultimately born out of a conversation I had with my brother where we were discussing the benefits and the drawbacks of taking antidepressants - how they can be beneficial in helping you function but oftentimes you can start to feel like a muted version of yourself,” says Muirgen.
“I thought the image of the báidín (small boat) floating you away from your problems, along with the nursery rhyme-like melody of the Irish air, gave a sense of innocence as a contrast to the seriousness of the topic.”
It’s Sean nós meets alternative pop, while also boasting an electronic beat-drop or two to kick up the mood. Muirġen gives us an unwavering hopefulness towards the future of Irish music, and she’s only just getting started!
Muirgen.Soda Blonde, ‘Suit & Tie'
Coming Soda Blonde's first studio release since dropping their latest EP People Pleaser in May, ‘Suit & Tie’ is the stripped back mood shifter we’ve all been looking for.
“I wrote ‘Suit & Tie’ about my own feelings of un-belonging and displacement,” says vocalist Faye O’Rourke.
“I didn’t grow up with a strong sense of national identity (my mother is from Dublin and my father is from London) and I began to explore my current feelings of loss and isolation through that lens while living in the Liberties, a part of Dublin with a very strong sense of itself. The song became a way of reclaiming something I felt I’d lost.”
The track treads the line of what it means to belong, examining identity from a place of judgement and acceptance. Layered backing vocals capture the state of reflection, with O’Rourke taking the lead on introspection and bringing an unwavering confidence to the process.
The band kick off their first North American headline tour in September!

“At the end of the day, it’s all rap,” Huss said to Hot Press earlier this month. “You can do so much with it. Towards the end of last year, I found what I want to do sonically. But I will definitely still experiment, it’s taken doing so many different genres to find what I really like.”

“Bad Boy is a collection of songs that captures my transition from late adolescence into young adulthood,” said Agnew of the EP. “It reflects my attempts to navigate desire, self-doubt, and vulnerability while exploring the relationships around me as a gay man. “It’s about how being inattentive can land me in hot water, which ironically makes me wander further into my thoughts, resulting in this perpetual cycle of inattentiveness,” said lead vocalist Daniel “Lango” Lang. “But also seeing it in others and observing how they try to cover it up/deal with it.”

Holylight has released the single ‘ceiling of your world’. The Dublin-based band is led by Alex Rosenberger. They released their debut EP, BeautyPain, in 2024.

The song itself features Herrnandez on the saxophone.
“When a place or a situation becomes too small, too restrictive, we can either shrivel or we can grow,” said Rosenberger. “If we decide to grow, we need to do so courageously and against the confines that hold us, through the cracks of the pot that is too small for our new roots, through the ceiling of the home that formerly contained our entire selves.”
