MOGWAI
Hardcore Mogwai spectacularly reimagined
On A Wrenched Virile Lore, Scottish post rockers Mogwai invite friends and fellow travellers to rework cuts from their seventh studio album Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will. The result is a hugely impressive twist on the Mogwai blueprint. Over 10 spectacular tracks, the remixers draw on everything from classical guitar, industrial metal, post-punk and ambient techno to add spice a-go-go to what were already impressive originals.
Texan Xander Harris turns ‘How To Be A Werewolf’ into an industrial horror-wave dance epic, full of synth, beeps and clicks, while Klad Hest brings ‘Rano Pano’ on a frantic adventure. Tim Hecker, Umberto and Robert Hampson feature too. But the standout moment is Glaswegian guitarist RM Hubbart demonstrating his technical and compositional prowess on a subtle configuring of ‘Mexican Grand Prix’. I’m not quite sure what a wrenched virile lore is, but I like it...
