Mastodon share single ‘In The Ruins’ ahead of upcoming album Marrow Deep

American heavy metal band Mastodon have shared their new single, ‘In The Ruins’, from their upcoming album Marrow Deep, out August 28.

The song is inspired by the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene on the American east coast and its effects on bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders’ family.

The storm severely flooded their home, destroying their personal belongings. What followed was a two year period of displacement coinciding with all of Mastodon grieving the passings of founding member Brent Hinds and drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor’s mother, Michele Lawrence.

The track is paired with a video by animation studio Hey Beautiful Jerk, that depicts “a fever dream journey by a single-eyed creature named Frank across flooded and ruined landscapes that serves as a metaphor for the song’s lyrics,” according to a press release.

Marrow Deep comes five years after the release of Hushed and Grim, their last album. It documents the founding members’, Brann Dailor, Troy Sanders and Bill Kelliher “emerging from years of personal upheaval with a renewed sense of purpose and reinvigorated drive,” according to a statement.

It marks the band’s first full-length record to feature guitarist Nick Johnston, alongside significant contributions from keyboardist João Nogueira.

‘In The Ruins’ follows previously released singles ‘Snakes For Dinner’, featuring Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, and ‘Your Ghost Again’.

The band will celebrate the album’s release with a tour of the US, kicking off September 16. They will be supported by Deafhaven and Alcest.
