Jamie Lidell: Jamie Lidell
Warp’s in-house prince goes utterly funk...
Jamie Lidell’s 2005 funk/soul album Multiply was a landmark release for both the UK artist and Sheffield’s Warp Records. Eight years on, Lidell has morphed into a fully-fledged soul man. Opener ‘I’m Selfish’ is raw and fresh, while ‘What A Shame’ sounds hedonistically funky: think Prince, Cee-Lo and Pop Levi rolled into one.
Occasionally the songs feel a little disjointed, though Lidell is always stunning as a vocalist. Lidell’s true talent, however, is as an arranger. On ‘You Know My Name’, ‘Blaming Something’ and ‘Don’t You Love Me’, the quality of his production work is stunning. Prince doesn’t need to watch his back just yet, but this is an impressive step forward from an immensely talented artist.
