In the new Hot Press: 1980s Special
The much anticipated release of John Carney’s Sing Street has us rightly excited — so much so, in fact, that we’ve turned the clock back and gone full-on retro for our new issue
Hot Press has gone ‘80s crazy this fortnight, as the outstanding new film Sing Street leads the way.
John Carney’s coming-of-age drama wowed the crowds at the prestigious Sundance festival earlier this year; as Irish audiences prepare to flock to cinemas, Olaf Tyaransen talks to the director, as well as the cast of one of the most fantastic and fun Irish movies in many a year.
All the excitement around the film put us in the mood to turn the clock back, so the issue is packed full of retro goodness; we look at the tunes and trends that defined the decade, have Zig and Zag talk us through the TV of the era, and Stuart Clark provides a riproaring guide to the wild world of pirate radio.
We’re not just looking backwards though; on the contrary. With Little Green Cars about to unveil their eagerly anticipated sophomore album, Ephemera, they take the other side of our special flip cover; inside, they talk to Colm O’Regan about how a period of loss and loneliness inspired their new material.
The aforementioned Mr O’R is also putting Hermitage Green through their paces, as the Limerick quintet share their debut LP, Save Your Soul. Kodaline’s Vinny May reveals why they’re so excited to return to Dublin for the blockbuster Bow St. Sessions, while Ed Murphy catches up with the frontman of the crazy and controversial Fat White Family.
Elsewhere, Stephen Roche swaps the saddle for the Mad Hatter’s Box, Edwin McFee runs the rule over Adele’s Belfast show, and our special feature looks at the bright state of affairs — and even brighter future — for live music in Ireland.
Throw in all the usual news, reviews, previews and everything else you’ve come to expect, and it’s another top-notch issue of Hot Press, in shops tomorrow!
