Fresh from a support slot on Damien Rice’s recent UK tour, Bray songwriter Fionn Regan has now released this intriguing EP on the Brighton-based Anvil Recordings. Although Regan’s strictly by-the-book compositions are a tad too traditionalist for my tastes, ‘Hotel Room’ nonetheless showcases an impressive stylistic range: ‘Like A Hurricane’ era Neil Young on the title track, lush piano balladry on ‘Change The Locks’ and tender, Nick Drake-style acoustica on ‘Abacus’. It won’t set the world on fire, but aficionados of the singer-songwriter genre could do worse than check this out.
