The Government has agreed in principle that the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra should come within the remit of the National Concert Hall and should not be established as a separate State body.
Minister for the Diaspora and International Development, Ciaran Cannon has welcomed the decision of the Government in relation to the future of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra.
Minister Cannon said: “As a composer, I am very pleased to learn of the Government’s decision with regard to the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra which has played a significant role in Irish cultural life.
“Though some people may regard classical and orchestral music as an obscure medium of expression to be enjoyed by the few, nothing could be further from the truth.
“Classical and orchestral music has a robust following across Ireland, provides a significant platform whereby many gifted musicians can make a living and the continued output of Irish composers proves that it is a living art.
He said that he is "in complete agreement" with the observation in the Boaden Report that "without the RTÉNSO in particular, there would be a major diminution in the nation’s cultural and artistic life".
Minister Cannon added: “Irish classical music is no less sinewy a bond with our diaspora than Irish traditional music and I look forward to hearing of the future discussions on the implementation of the Boaden Report’s recommendations and to the enhanced access to orchestral music that will ultimately be created for lovers of music.”
