The controversy about the cancellation of Garth Brooks shows took a new turn tonight, with Dublin City Council issuing a statement that the decision to licence only three of five planned concerts could not be amended or appealed.
The statement is clearly aimed at closing down discussion of the possibility that the additional two concerts might yet be accommodated. The Minister for Tourism, Leo Varadker, has also said that the onus is on the promoters to reschedule or relocate the cancelled shows.
Meanwhile, things have also been happening at local level, with new residents groups emerging, who are supporting the running of the concerts. Among the reasons cited for the refusal to allow all five concerts to go ahead was that they would have too great an impact on the local community.
"There are many locals who feel that their views are being misrepresented," one resident told Hot Press. "No one is saying that it is ideal to have five concerts – but a lot of people around here would by far prefer to see them going ahead, rather than standing in the way of fans who want to enjoy the music."

A number of petitions have been launched, some of which Hot Press has seen, and which support the running of the concerts – but with different emphases.Either way, it is clear that developments will be needed soon, if any kind of a solution is to be found. Watch this space...
