Five Reasons To Get ‘Carried Away’ by Nell Mescal
Following another major year for Nell Mescal – in which she signed to Atlantic Records, embarked on her biggest headline tour to date, and released her acclaimed new EP, The Closest We’ll Get – here are five reasons why this Irish singer-songwriter should be at the top of your playlist…
1. The Raw Emotion – an artist who’s not afraid to dig deep
From her earliest singles, released back when she was still only a teenager, Nell Mescal’s emotional depth and candid vulnerability immediately marked her as a special talent. Whether opening up about loneliness (‘Homesick’), lost love (‘In My Head’), or body image and self-worth (‘Thin’), her songs have always been both deeply personal and effortlessly relatable – and her latest EP, The Closest We'll Get, takes that even further.
You can hear the emotion in her voice for yourself on stand-out track ‘Middle Man’:
2. The Dream Collaboration – teaming up with producer Philip Weinrobe
With The Closest We’ll Get, the Co. Kildare-raised singer-songwriter has embraced a captivatingly tender and intimate new sonic world – with the help of renowned New York-based producer Philip Weinrobe. Famed for his work with Adrianne Lenker, Weinrobe has also recently worked with other folk-leaning Irish acts Amble and Ye Vagabonds.
“He’s a wizard – that is the only word to describe him,” Nell recently told Hot Press. “He just has some sort of magic. You walk into a room, and you know something special is going to happen."

3. The Community – the devoted fanbase that has built up around her music
With lyrics that tap into the concerns of a generation, it's no surprise that a powerful community has formed around Nell's work – both in the front row at her shows, and online (with nearly five million likes on TikTok, and millions of Spotify streams). Nell has lots of time for her fans too:
“My highlight of the tour has been when I’m at the merch stand after the show, talking to people,” she told us. “When you meet someone who’s getting emotional while they’re talking to you, or is telling you how important a song is to them… There’s no way of describing that feeling.”

4. The Live Show – commanding intimate venues and arenas alike
Her dazzling discography speaks for itself – but Nell’s skills as a live performer are equally worthy of attention. Earlier this month, she wrapped up her biggest headline tour to date with a run of Irish shows – including a Button Factory gig that scored a rave review from Hot Press. Just a few weeks before that, she proved that she has no problem adapting to bigger stages – as she ticked off another major career milestone, with her first arena tour, supporting HAIM.
“I’m still at the point where every show feels different,” said Nell. “When it’s quiet, it’s really intimate and lovely. And when it’s loud, and everyone is shouting along, I can’t stop smiling…”
5. The Famous Fans – impressing HAIM, The Last Dinner Party, Maisie Peters and more
“Our queen”, is what The Last Dinner Party once hailed Nell as in a Hot Press interview – and they’re by no means the only big-name acts in the Irish singer-songwriter’s fan club. Nell has been hand-picked for major support slots by some of the most influential artists in the business, including, mostly recently, HAIM, who she describes as “so lovely” and “gracious with their time....”
“I also remember getting a text off Maisie Peters,” Nell told Hot Press, recalling the early days of her career. “I was such a fan, so things like that were really sweet – especially when it’s genuine. When you get a really nice message from someone, it’s like a nice pat on the back that helps push you a little bit further.”
The Closest We'll Get is out now.
