First Fortnight returns to Dublin in January

As an idea, First Fortnight's arts-based project to raise awareness of mental health issues is both admirable and inspired. For the past two years, it has been an idea well-executed to boot, so it is heartening to see First Fortnight 2012 being given the go ahead.

This time around, rather than being a one day event, First Fortnight will be transformed into a two week programme of live music and events that fall under the mental health umbrella. Talks and discussions on the issues involved will be held during the day, with plenty of shows and exhibitions scheduled to take place.

The Therapy Sessions will happen on January 4, 6 and 11 at The Workman's Club in Dublin, gathering musicians, poets and writers together in an intimate space. Elsewhere, there will be theatre and a screening of stunning documentary The Devil & Daniel Johnston at the Irish Film Insitute at 4pm on Saturday January 7.

On the live music front, the whole project will come to an end with a show in the Button Factory on Saturday January 4. That evening, rising stars Cashier No. 9 and Le Galaxie will both play, with a few special guests still to be announced.
