Disorder - On Our Radar Q&A: "An understated milestone for bands is getting comfortable together"
Rising Belfast alternative crew Disorder discuss their new single ‘Icarus’, creativity and important milestones.
How would you describe the band in one sentence?
David: This is probably quite cheesy, but just a few mates or bais. That’s how Ewan and Jack say it in that part of Belfast.
Did ‘Icarus’ come together quickly, or was it one you wrestled with for a while?
David: We supported Dea Matrona and played it. From there, we were like, ‘That’s gotta be the next song we release’.
Jack: It’s one of those songs that’s very easy to fall in love with.
Ewan: It just flowed out of us. Every time we came back to it, it was like, ‘That works, put that in’.
What did making the Summerhouse EP teach you about yourselves as a band?
Jack: It was a statement piece of work to show we aren’t just going to put out a few singles – we can knuckle down and put together a body of work. It showed that we are serious about it.
David: It’s definitely taught us that the music industry is a lot more than just writing and playing a few tunes. Whenever you get asked to do gigs, it’s such a creative space and it’s made us far more creative people.
What’s been the biggest milestone for the band so far?
David: The first time we played Limelight in Belfast. Oasis and Inhaler have played there, so it was a cool moment for us. An understated milestone for bands is getting comfortable together. It’s like a relationship - you keep that ship steady and really believe in each other.
What do you want people to feel when they leave a Disorder gig?
David: I want people to relate to the music – if it’s through wanting to have a boogie or a cry.
Ewan: I think they can tell we’re having fun. That’s my main goal, to get people to feel even half of what we’re feeling.
David: It might be a question to rediscover in a few years, when we have a massive tour budget, and we can start putting pyro on the stage!
