"We all thought we were dead; it was awful," says an eye-witness.
At least twenty people have been killed and more than a hundred injured after what is believed to be a lone gunman opened fire at the end of the three-day Route 91 Harvest country music festival, which was taking place next to the Mandalay Bay casino in Las Vegas.
According to the LVMPD, “One suspect is down… and at this time we do not believe there are any more shooters.” The suggestion is that the suspect is a local.
Automatic gunfire flashes were seen on the upper floors of the casino as a crowd of 40,000 fans was watching a headline performance by Jason Aldean who was on a bill also featuring the likes of Eric Church, Jake Owen, Tyler Reeve, Dee Jay Silver and Bobby Bones And The Raging Idiots.
“I heard what we thought was firecrackers, and we looked to the right of us and there was a woman down covered in blood," a witness identified as Emily told local Fox TV affiliate KLAS. "From that point on we just ran. We hid wherever we could, and now in an airplane hangar.
"We had no idea, it was just rapid fire. We all thought we were dead. It was awful. It just kept going, and going and going. It felt like an eternity but it went for at least several minutes. Each place we hid for a couple of minutes, and we moved to a new location and the fire would start again."
Update, 11:24
The suspected gunman has been identified as Stephen Paddock, a 64-year-old man from Mesquite, Nevada according to NBC News. Described as a "local individual", Paddock does not appear to have any known ties with terrorist organisations.
Paddock is said to have been firing his weapon from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel
Police are also reportedly searching for a woman described as his "companion".
Confirming that one suspect is down. This is an active investigation. Again, please do not head down to the Strip at this time.
