Album Review: New Pagans, Making Circles Of Our Own
Alt-rockers unleash biblical new opus
New Pagans caught lightning in a bottle on their stunning 2021 debut LP. Now, this potent Northern Irish-based crew are ready to electrify us once again with its sequel. And boy, do they succeed! Recorded in the Glens of Antrim, the quintet continue their hot streak, with ten tracks that will open minds, while doubtless sparking plentiful moshpit action.
An inspirational, often explosive opus, Making Circles Of Our Own finds them in buoyant mood (by their standards!), as they aim to bring some good vibes to these bad times.
‘Better People’ opens the album with a bang – loaded with hooks and hope, it’s one of their best tunes yet. The goth-speckled ‘A Process Of Becoming’, meanwhile, is another stand-out. Pensive and powerful, the Lyndsey McDougall-led bunch really flex their musical muscles on the gloom-laden number.
Elsewhere, the scuzzy, Sebadoh-esque ‘Fresh Young Overlook’ impresses, as does the cello-based curveball ‘The State Of My Love’s Desires’. Tipping a cap to The Beatles, this uplifting number ends proceedings on a high note. It could signal the beginning of an exciting new chapter.
8/10
