Album Review: Amyl and the Sniffers, Truth or Consequence (Live from El Coyote)

A decade on from when this scribe first reviewed their deliciously raw debut EP for this very publication, Amyl and the Sniffers have somehow become mainstream darlings. In fact, so bankable are they these days, the band have convinced the powers that be to let them release a concert movie.

Filmed at the famous El Coyote Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles in front of a few mates, the accompanying soundtrack captures the fun and intimacy of the show, as they re-imagine their back catalogue as cowpunk songs. Giving their trademark buzz-saw guitars and high octane energy the boot may raise a few eyebrows, but the off-the-charts charisma of frontwoman Amy Taylor remains an ace card.

Highlights include a skiffle-spiced run-through of ‘Bailing On Me’, the spaghetti western-meets-Ramones flavoured ‘Chewing Gum’, and the new version of ‘Snakes’, which sounds like the Sesame Street gang singing an X-Ray Spex song around a campfire.

An enjoyable if not entirely essential listen, Truth Or Consequences is a solid live offering – and the only thing missing is some spilled beer and the sound of mullets flapping in the breeze.
