Album Review: IDLES, TANGK
Bristol band rip up the rulebook. 7/10
These Bristol-based, pedal-bashing disruptors have come a long way since I first wrote about IDLES six years ago in our 'Hot For 2018' spread. Now arguably one of the biggest guitar bands of their generation, the laurels-phobic five-piece have earned an army of fans with their unflinching accounts of modern life and ferocious live shows. Fifth album TANGK will only swell their ranks, as they embark on a bold new chapter.
Serving as a brief crack of light for these dark days, the LP is all about everyone’s favourite four letter word – love. Leaving behind the righteous rage of old in a bid to reinvent themselves once more, IDLES embrace more loops, electronics, grooves and cinematic soundscapes. Firebrand frontman Joe Talbot continues to grow as a singer too, and virtually abandons his growls and howls for soulful, softer croons (‘Jungle’ ‘Monolith’). Calling to mind the late great Mark Lanegan in places – especially on the hypnotic, ’50s rock ‘n’ roll-spiced ‘Roy’ – TANGK hits the mark more than it misses, and could signal the start of an exciting new era.
