WATCH: Netflix release trailer for Jennifer Lopez thriller The Mother
"I'm a killer, but I am also a mother," professes Jennifer Lopez's protagonist.
Netflix has released the official trailer for its upcoming film The Mother, which is set to arrive to the streaming platform May 12th.
Directed by Whale Rider's Niki Caro, the film follows Jennifer Lopez, an assassin who goes into hiding with her estranged daughter, played by Lucy Paez. Lopez's character must bond with the girl– who she gave up at birth– and teach her to protect herself after she is forced back into her mother's world of crime.
The action-packed trailer opens in a flashback to Paez's character's birth. “The only way you protect that child is to disappear," an FBI agent tells Lopez, warning the protagonist of two mysterious enemies. "They’ll find you. Both of you."
Twelve years later, Lopez is forced to reconnect with her daughter, rescuing her after she is kidnapped. Viewers then see the duo in hiding out together in the Alaskan wilderness.
"I wanna go home," begs Paez's character, crying. "Not until you know how to survive," rebuffs Lopez, before a shot of a bleeding wolf flashes onto the screen.
The essence of the trailer can be found in Lopez's drive to protect her daughter. She is willing to do whatever it takes to keep the young girl safe, even if it includes crashing a car, torturing a man and getting into a series of physical fights (all of which are depicted in the trailer).
The Mother was adapted from a story by author Misha Green, written by Andrea Berloff of Straight Outta Compton, Peter Craig of Top Gun: Maverick and Green, herself.
Other members of the cast include Joseph Fiennes, Omari Hardwick, Paul Raci, Fahim Fazli and Gael Garcia Berna.
The Mother is set for release on Netflix May 12th.
