Metropolis screening to take place at National Concert Hall to celebrate 100th anniversary
Fritz Lang's silent film was first released on January 14, 2027.
A special screening of Metropolis is set to take place at the National Concert Hall on January 24, 2027, to celebrate the film's 100th year anniversary.
The centenary presentation will be accompanied by a new live score by Matthew Nolan and Neil O'Connor, alongside guest musicians Lisa Dowdall, Sean MacErlaine, Sharon Phelan, and Erik Frieldander.
Fritz Lang's iconic science fiction film first premiered in Berlin, Germany, on January 14, 2027, and is considered one of the most influential movies of all time, inspiring the likes of Blade Runner and The Matrix.
Metropolis is set in a dystopian future, the plot follows the fight between Metropolis' overlord Joh Fredersen (Alfred Abel) and an inventor, Rotwang (Rudolf Klein-Rogge). Rotwang creates a city-wide apocalypse by having his robot creation impersonate prominent social activist Maria (Brigitte Helm).
The robot version of Maria sows discord among the city's oppresssed workers, while their wealthy counterparts are driven to lustful violence due to her seductive nightclub appearances.
The movie screening is in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Ireland, and is from the collection of the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau Foundation in Wiesbaden.
Established in 1966, the foundation has been committed to preserving Germany's cinematic heritage, with the significant discovery of a nearly complete version of Metropolis in Buenos Aires allowing for the acclaimed restoration and re-release of the film.
Tickets for Metropolis 100 can be found here.
