Sequel to The Exorcist directed by David Gordon Green in production
The fifth sequel in the franchise looks set to closely follow the 1973 original.
Blumhouse Productions has revealed details for their upcoming sequel to the horror classic, The Excorcist.
The film will be directed by David Gordon Green, who was also at the helm for the 2018 reboot and sequel to Halloween.
The producer and President of the production company behind the new film, Jason Blum, told the film blog Den of Geek that it will closely mirror the original's ethos and be a retconned sequel. Attempting to allay fears from diehard fans of the film, he said that he wants to prove those opposed to the new movie wrong.
"It’s going to be like David’s Halloween sequel,” Blum said. “It’s going to pleasantly surprise all the sceptics out there.
"We had a lot of skeptics about Halloween and David turned them around, and I think he’s going to turn it around with The Exorcist."
Blumhouse Productions was also involved in the Halloween reboot, which grossed over $255.6 million worldwide and was critically acclaimed compared to other modern horror sequels.
"I want to make a movie for people that know and love the first Exorcist and are furious that we’re doing this, but somehow drag themselves to the theatre,” he continued.
"I want them to come out happy. And I want to make a movie that people who’ve never heard of The Exorcist really enjoy. I think David did that with Halloween. I think he’ll do that with The Exorcist also."
Although no release date is set for the new film, you can check out the trailer from the same director's Halloween reboot below for a taste of his style:
