Mitski unveils 'Cop Car,' a new song for 'The Turning' Soundtrack

American indie rock darling Mitski has released a brooding rock track for The Turning, a new horror film out January 24th.

The eerie track is inspired by the grunge era, weaving seamlessly between melodic and discordant guitar chords until it erupts into a cacophony of strings. Mitski's vocal begins on a whisper and ends on a crash, spitting out lyrics like "I am cruel, I am gentle, I can make you laugh / I've loved many boys, I've loved many girls / I don't think about the past, it's always there anyway."

The Turning is based on Henry James' horror novella The Turn of the Screw, about a governess who goes to take care of two children in a haunted mansion. The film, which stars Canadian born actress Mackenzie Davis, will be set in the Nineties, and the producers wanted a soundtrack to reflect the era. "'Cop Car' went beyond what we imagined and we were ecstatic when she sent it to us!" says soundtrack producer Lawrence Rothman.

The Turning was filmed partially in County Wicklow, with Kilruddery Estate among the filming locations. The soundtrack includes songs by Courtney Love, Soccer Mommy, and Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard's new band The Aubreys.
