The soundtrack of Netflix's new series House of Guinness features a line-up of almost entirely Irish artists, including KNEECAP, Fontaines D.C., The Mary Wallopers, Thin Lizzy, The Murder Capital, Ye Vagabonds and The Clancy Brothers.
"I had one basic rules – Everything had to be Irish!" said director Tom Shankland.
"The music scene in Ireland has always been so dynamic. I did a deep dive with our brilliant music supervisor, Amelia Hartley, but also invited our cast to hit me with ideas."
"This was all part of giving the cast the space to take ownership of the tone of the show beyond just brilliantly playing their characters."
The series features a mix of both contemporary and legendary Irish acts, spanning multiple genres.
"From early on I had a feeling we would be mixing up some more trad folky sounds with more modern stuff," said Shankland.
"This felt right for our general tone."
"The point that needs to be made is that these people, in reality, were in their early 20s when they inherited this enormous responsibility - they’re young people, and the music needs to reflect that fact," said the show's writer and creator Steve Knight.
"It needs to be as wild and rebellious and fast as the characters, and so we do use fantastic folk music, which has this incredible rhythm and power of the fiddle or Irish dance, but also use modern music, which really captures the mood of the show. "
The Mary Wallopers' Charles and Andrew Hendy feature on the soundtrack not only with The Wallopers, but also with their previous rap group TPM.
Other Irish artists in the line-up include Lisa O’Neill, The Scratch and Pebbledash.
