Bad Bunny to star in historical drama Porto Rico
It's the global superstar's first lead acting role.
Bad Bunny is set to star in new historical drama film Porto Rico.
Inspired by true events, the film will center on late 19th century Puerto Rican revolutionary José Maldonado Román (also known as Águila Blanca), who fought with the Cuban Liberation Army.
Oscar winner Javier Bardem will star opposite Bad Bunny in Porto Rico. Oscar nominees Edward Norton and Viggo Mortensen round out the cast.
Directed by Grammy-winning rapper Residente (René Pérez Joglar), Porto Rico began development in 2023. It will be Residente's directorial debut. He co-wrote the script with Alexander Dinelaris.
Acclaimed Mexican filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu (The Revenant, Birdman) will executive produce.
Born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, Bad Bunny's turn in Porto Rico comes at the the height of his music career. The Puerto Rican superstar won Album of the Year with his sixth studio album DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS at the 2026 Grammys. It was the first fully Spanish-language album to win the award.
A week later, Bad Bunny made history at the Super Bowl as the first artist to perform the halftime show entirely in Spanish. His halftime show was the fourth-most viewed of all time and broke the record for most social media viewings.
Bad Bunny has been named Spotify Global Wrapped's most streamed artist of the year four times, the only artist to ever do so.
Since his television acting debut in Narcos: Mexico in 2021, he has appeared in several films, including Caught Stealing, Bullet Train, and Cassandro. This will be Bad Bunny's first leading role in a film.
