Gay Civil Partnerships for Ireland?
The Irish government is set to consider recognising gay partnerships before the end of the year. A proposal from Minister Michael McDowell has been accepted by Cabinet and a working group will be set up to examine how a civil partnerships registry, such as the British system, would work in Ireland. The proposed reforms will look at all domestic partnerships, not just gay ones. The Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Minister McDowell are both said to favour gay civil partnerships (though not with one another).
