Javier Bardem in talks for Frankenstein's monster role
As part of Universal's new monster movie universe
Chalk up another major villain role for Javier Bardem.
The Spanish actor is in talks to join several high-profile performers in Universal's new, interconnected monster movie universe. Should he sign on, Bardem would portray Frankenstein's monster.
A Bride of Frankenstein film is planned, but the monster would likely make a movie appearance before this feature. The studio wants Angelina Jolie for the Bride role.
Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, and Sofia Boutella are all confirmed to appear in the upcoming Universal Monsters film The Mummy. Boutella will appear in the title role, and Crowe will appear as Dr. Jekyll. The Mummy will be the second entry in Universal's monster universe, following 2014's Dracula Untold.
Bardem, who turned down the Jekyll role, has been acclaimed for his portrayals of bad guys. He won an Oscar for his role in No Country for Old Men, played the antagonist in Skyfall, and will appear as the villain in the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie, which is in post-production.
