George Clooney condemns Washington DC shooting, calling on citizens to "truly make America great again"
"I disagree with everything that this administration stands for, but there's no place for the kind of violence," said Clooney.
George Clooney has condemned the April 25 shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington D.C., calling on citizens to "truly make America great again."
Last Saturday, gunshots were fired during the annual dinner at the Washington Hilton. Donald Trump, alongside Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and members of the Cabinet were evacuated by the Secret Service. It was the first White House Correspondents' Dinner that Trump had attended as president and the third attempt to assassinate him.
On Monday, during his award acceptance speech at the 51st Chaplin Award Gala in New York, Clooney advocated against hatred, corruption, cruelty, and violence.
He criticised Donald Trump's politics, while condemning both violence caused by ICE and the shooting at the White House Correspondents' dinner.
"I disagree with everything that this administration stands for, but there's no place for the kind of violence we saw two nights ago in Washington DC," said Clooney according to Variety.
"Nor is there a room for this kind of violence in Minnesota with Alex Pretti or Renee Good," he added.
During his speech, the actor also directed a few words to the audience, asking them to unite despite differences.
"The question is simply, what are we, as citizens of this great country, to do? And it is that answer in all of us, left, right and centre, to build a more perfect union, heal our wounds and begin to truly make America great again."
Clooney's Chaplin Awards speech followed his criticism of Trump's "a whole civilisation will die tonight" threat against Iran, where he accused Trump of committing a war crime. Read more here.
