Saw Doctors have sights on Christmas number one

Their cover of 'Downtown' is due out Friday.

The Saw Doctors will join X Factor contestants and the two-headed monster that is Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber in vying for the Christmas number one slot on Friday with the release of their cover of 1960's hit 'Downtown'. The song and video, which you can watch below, both feature original performer Petula Clark, now 79.

Guitarist Leo Moran says, “Petula wanted to be involved, and we got her into a London studio for two hours at the end of August on a stopover between Los Angeles and Geneva, where she now lives”.

The band will be making 1,000 limited edition CDs of the single available at Zhivago and HMV on Shop Street in their native Galway for 99 cent.

'If Only'

At least The Saw Doctors never let you down. You always get what you’d expect: good old slap-yourself-on-the-knee pub songs! Toning things down ever so slightly, ‘If Only’ marks a slight return to the subtler, less raucous folk rock of 1996’s Same Old Town. Though it retains the vibrancy of the past, it also marks a more mature Saw Doctors outlook of regret and nostalgia. Excellent b-side ‘Going Home’ builds on such wistfulness, adding to the group’s well of immigrant songs, and is worth the prize of the single alone.
