The Hot Press Hot For 2010 stars are also number one in the States.
Owl City have stormed to the top of the Irish singles charts with 'Fireflies'. Already a US No.1, the single debuted in the Irish charts at No. 39 last week and reached No.2 in the UK. Universal Ireland have now gone one better than their London-based counterparts, with the record sweeping to the top spot here.
Owl City is the musical identity of Adam Young from Minnesota in the US. Influenced by European electronic music and disco, Young released his third album – his first on Universal – Ocean Eyes last year. It contained the breakthrough single, 'Fireflies' – a highly accomplished '80s influenced piece of pop electronica – which went to No.1 in the Billboard Hot 100 and to No.2 in Canada. Ocean Eyes went on to become a US top 10 hit – a performance it is now likely to repeat on this side of the Atlantic.
Meanwhile, Lady Gaga has returned to the top of the album charts with The Fame/The Fame Monster, which has been over a year in the charts at this stage. Paolo Nutini – about to make his debut on the cover of Hot Press – slips from the top spot to No.2 and Flonrence and the Machine's Lungs remains in the Top 3. Vampire Weekend have also slipped marginally, from No.4 to No.7 with the acclaimed Contra. Meanwhile, emphasising one of the quiet success stories of the past few months, Mumford and Sons hold firm at No.8 in their 16th week in the charts with Sigh No More – which rugby star Gordon D'Arcy named as one of his current favourites in the latest issue of Hot Press.
