Freezin' Up
With its thigh-smacking tambourines, hand-claps and harmonies, sweet’n’rapturous girl-group melodies, the ecstatically groovy smack-and-swing of its drumming, and a full (and extremely excited-sounding) orchestra going river-deep, mountain-high in the background – not to mention a touch of that minor-key fatalism all great girl groups applied as skilfully as their liquid eyeliner – this could have been written and produced by Phil Spector and sung by the girls out of Abba. Well, the girls out of Abba if they were Californian, and about 19, and sun-golden and lanky and… er, hang on, Jessie and Layla are two sisters from Wicklow, actually. How very weird.
Yes, this is shamelessly, shamelessly retro, but it nonetheless will help you get in touch with your inner Shirelle, Crystal or Ikette and deserves your un-frozen, warmed-up love.
