Zohran Mamdani, Jimmy Kimmel, Cynthia Nixon and more react to ICE murder of Minneapolis woman
The shooting on Wednesday occurred about a mile from where George Floyd was killed by police in 2020.
Reactions have poured in following yesterday's murder of Minneapolis woman Renee Nicole Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer.
Good, a 37 year old mother who lived in the neighbourhood, was one of several legal observers using their vehicles to block ICE during a protest action against immigration enforcement. She was shot in the head before losing control of her vehicle and crashing into a nearby snowbank. The Trump administration have claimed Good was trying to ram her car into an ICE officer.
US President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to claim the officer had acted in self defense while being run over by Good.
"[...] The reason these incidents are happening is because the Radical Left is threatening, assaulting, and targeting our Law Enforcement Officers and ICE Agents on a daily basis,” Trump claimed. “They are just trying to do the job of MAKING AMERICA SAFE."
Following Trump's statements, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz referred to Trump as a "propaganda machine" and stated on social media that "the state will ensure there is a full, fair, and expeditious investigation to ensure accountability and justice".
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey responded to the US federal government's claim that the officer was acting in self-defense, calling the accusations "bullshit" and telling ICE to "get the fuck out of Minneapolis".
The shooting on Wednesday occurred about a mile from where George Floyd was killed by police in 2020, which sparked nation-wide anti-racism and police brutality protests.
Newly inaugurated New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani also commented on yesterday's events at a press conference on Wednesday evening.
"The news coming out of Minneapolis is horrific," said Mamdani. "This is one part that has been a year full of cruelty, and we know that when ICE agents attack immigrants, they attack every one of us across this country".
Late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel called Trump out in his Jimmy Kimmel Live! monologue last night, calling the US President a "maniac".
“What we need at a time like this, besides common sense when it comes to guns and mental health care, is compassion and leadership," said Kimmel. "We did not get that from our president, because he has none of it to give."
Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon, French singer-songwriter Oklou and indie-pop producer Finneas are among the musicians to condemn the violence on social media. Other celebrities, such as Mamma Mia actress Amanda Seyfried, The Bear's Ayo Edebri, and activist and Sex In The City actress Cynthia Nixon, have also expressed their anger regarding the killing.
"Arrest that ICE agent and charge him with murder," wrote Nixon to social media.
Seyfried was one of many to repost a quote from George Orwell's 1984 novel in an Instagram story, reading: "The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command”
