Watch: The Mary Wallopers perform live on Garvaghy Road
A solidarity rally in support of the local residents is set to take place on Garvaghy Road this Saturday
Following the likes of Huartan and Beoga, The Mary Wallopers have become the latest Irish group to perform live on Garvaghy Road in Portadown, Co. Armagh, in solidarity with the local community.
Their performance took place in front of a large gathering yesterday, on the fifth day of the ongoing stand-off – as the largely nationalist area remains strongly opposed to the Orange march going ahead through their community.
"There's been peace here for a long time," The Mary Wallopers' Andrew Hendy told The Irish News ahead of the Dundalk band's performance. "And there's been a lot of positive stuff happening. Even the Fleadh in Belfast is very positive, and good craic – people from both sides of the community get involved in it. So why now try and irritate tensions? There's no need for it."
Many other Irish musicians have also voiced their support for those gathered on the Garvaghy Road – including Damien Dempsey, who performed a rendition of his track 'Marching Season Siege' in a video message shared this morning.
Last night, talks between members of the Garvaghy Road Residents Coalition and Portadown Orange Order failed to resolve the dispute, Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Bryant said.
"I think this is the end of these conversations," he told reporters. "We haven't come to a settled agreement, and it's a shame, but my door remains open."
Residents of the area had launched a legal bid to try and prevent the march from going ahead, but it has been postponed until Monday.
A solidarity rally in support of the local residents is set to take place on Garvaghy Road this Saturday, October 3, at 3pm.
"Thank you for the incredibly warm welcome on Garvaghy Rd this afternoon," The Mary Wallopers wrote on Instagram following their performance. "In the words of Jinx Lennon, Keep er lit and don’t take shit."
