John Halligan calls for US military flights to be banned from Shannon
The minister makes the comments in the second part of his Hot Press interview, published this morning on hotpress.com
John Halligan has called for a ban on US military planes landing at Shannon Airport, saying "If I had my way, I wouldn't let them land there at all."
The comment comes during his extraordinary Hot Press interview with Jason O'Toole, the second part of which was published this morning right here on hotpress.com. The exchange has already been recognised as one of the most honest and forthright interviews with an Irish politician in many a year – and his take on the controversial use of the airport is typically unflinching.
"We're afraid of the goddamn Americans - that's what it is! Is there someone seriously telling me no munitions have been carried in any of these planes? Sure, this is what we're being told: 'Oh, they're only carrying soldiers'. They're not - they're carrying munitions. You know that and I know that. And all of these planes should be searched."
The opinions of the Minister for Training, Skills and Innovation are likely to once again rock the boat, and cause eyebrows to be raised across the political spectrum. His comments on issues including prostitution and assisted suicide – printed in the issue of Hot Press currently on shelves – have already caused a veritable media storm, and its likely that the second part of the interview will prompt similar debate and discussion in the days to come.
