Waxahatchee – Ivy Tripp
Katie Crutchfield returns with superb third collection.
In an age of AutoTune ’n’ twerking, Ivy Tripp – the third album from Waxahatchee (aka Alabama’s Katie Crutchfield) – is a welcome breath of fresh, indie air.
Full of melodic riffs, sweet harmonies and direct lyrics, the album moves from delicate lo-fi to raucous rock without ever feeling contrived. It’s a personal record, the concept revolving around being stuck in a rut; according to the singer, the title ‘Ivy Tripp’ relates to “directionlessness, specifically of the twentysomething, thirtysomething, fortysomething of today.” Crucially, though, the album never feels jaded. Even when reflecting on a failed relationship on ‘Half Moon’, Crutchfield manages to locate some hope amid the gloom. Overall, an impressively accomplished and eclectic offering.
Key Track - 'Air'
