WATCH: Irish premiere of Regret Will Come’s ‘Tainaka’
It is the first single to be taken from his upcoming third album.
Regret Will Come has released the music video for his new song ‘Tanaika’.
It is the first single taken from his self-titled third album which is set to be released next month.
“It's mostly about the fear of not being accepted socially for a number of reasons; substance abuse, mental health issues, sexual perversions etc,” explains Fintan Gallagher, the man behind the persona Regret Will Come. “I use 'Tainaka' as a mannequin of sorts to project my fears onto, in a way of maybe normalising and accepting my own shortcomings.”
A bedroom pop artist from Monaghan, Regret Will Come regularly refers back to themes such as nostalgia, social and mental aguish through his use of abstract lyrics. He records all his music using his homemade studio which consists of a Singstar microphone and Audacity.
“I recorded this song before i moved to Dublin, when i was living in the dolmens of Monaghan,” he said. “The countryside has a sereneness to it that influences a lot of my music i think, in a kind of nostalgic way. I grew up there so i think there's a lot of that countryside in my work.”
The video was produced by Sunburnt Soul Films, a production company who has previously made music videos for Joshua Burnside and Rogue Opinions. The entirety of the video comprises of a variety of stock footage.
“The choice to use only stock footage relates specifically to the lo-fi genre that Regret Will Come works within,” said Andrew McConnell, who forms Sunburnt Soul Films alongside JJ McDunphy. “It fit the lo-fi aesthetic quite well because its taking a boring product of our culture and putting a different creative spin on it”
“All in all, it took around a year to piece the video together. It was a process of scanning through droves of footage for the next clip that furthered the narrative in the way that I wanted and seeing if it fit with what I already had.”
