The Winters: Riches,
Dubliners VARIED take on Americana
Taking their inspiration largely from American roots music – including folk, country, blues, Gospel and soul (and more specifically from almost-forgotten Texas legends The Sir Douglas Quintet) – this authentic-sounding Dublin five-piece features some fine playing alongside the distinctive vocals of Lorraine McColgan.
They certainly cover a lot of ground: the brooding title cut recalls the widescreen sepia-toned balladry of the Cowboy Junkies, while ‘Hold Me Down’ is gothic Americana. The jangly folk-rock of ‘The Rain Is Falling Down Again’ brings to mind The Jayhawks and Uncle Tupelo, the wistful ‘Holly Go Lightly’ (featuring the duetting voice of guitarist Ed McGinley,) showcases a sweet blend of Gram and Emmylou.
Elsewhere the ‘Starlight Song’ is a Band-like country rock tune with a compelling melody and lovely brass arrangement while a version of Dylan’s classic ‘Just Like Thom Thumb’s Blues’ offers an interesting take on one of his early classics. Other highlights include the lonesome pedal steel guitar on the plaintive ‘Even In July’, the twangy ‘Real Lies’, and ‘I Want My Baby Back’ which recalls sixties psychedelic garage country-rock. The Winters could be a surprise summer hit.
Key Track:‘When are you going to love me'
